Measured, lucid, serene, and above all, superlatively intelligent, Martin Hughes's piano recital at the Queen Elizabeth Hall yesterday was an artistic triumph, something for his audience to treasure in their hearts and minds.
Mr Hughes's superfine ear for detail was of the sort that that even the most remarkable pianist might envy. In Beethoven's Appassionata Sonata his brilliantly acute response to the music's wildly fluctuating drama was a deeply refreshing contrast to the the customary bombast or traditional pomp and rhetoric.
In Schubert's A major Sonata his unforced originality and fastidious sense of line illuminated every facet of this profoundly elusive music, and his entire reading was a tour de force of the first rank.
Few young pianists show such an unerring sense of musical proportion or poetic refinement
-- The Daily Telegraph, London

Martin Hughes delivered the solo part of Oiseaux Exotiques with brilliant vividness, hectic and delicate by turns and always lucid; superb playing, echoed in the raucous avian swirlings and drummings of wind and percussion

Martin Hughes is a marvellous pianist and he brought much refinement and energy to the work (Beethoven Piano Concerto Nr. 2 Op. 19) . His cadenza in the first movement was superb; it managed to be virtuosic and understated simultaneously and was so well articulated that every note rang out.
