Guy Thomas: The Symphonies of Jean Sibelius

A Discography and Discussion

Published in December 1990, to celebrate the 125th Anniversary of the birth of the composer, this complete listing of the recordings of Sibelius' symphonies made between 1931 and 1989 is complemented by an extensive essay discussing the many different interpretations committed to record during that period.

This is the first such study of its kind and represents the fruit of many hours of listening and comparisons by a musician familiar with the scores and the recording techniques used over the years. It contains information and many valuable insights not available elsewhere.

The author's passion for the music of Sibelius has also been fuelled by experience of them in the concert hall, both as a listener and as a player (bassoon). The study has been designed to appeal to professional musicians and music lovers alike.

In response to continued demand, the study has been newly printed in November 2012.

The Sibelius scholar, Robert Layton, writing in Gramophone (Feb, 1992) described this study as "...an uncommonly perceptive commentary..."
